Privacy policy
Last updated: 21 October 2026
The Chimney Sweep Directory operates this directory and is responsible for the personal information we use to run it. For privacy questions or requests, email [email protected].
Information we use
- Website requests: our hosting and security providers process technical information such as your IP address, browser information, requested pages and request times to deliver and protect the site.
- Searches: keywords and selected filters are sent to our search service to return results. The service also receives the technical information needed to handle the request. Avoid entering sensitive personal information into search boxes.
- Messages: if you email us, we receive your email address, name and anything you include in your message, such as a listing correction or business suggestion. Please only send information needed for your enquiry.
- Business listings: published business information can include names, business addresses, telephone numbers, email addresses, websites and descriptions. Some business details may also identify a sole trader or an individual contact. Listings use public business information and information supplied for publication.
Browsing does not require an account. Contacting a listed business directly is handled by that business.
Why we use information
We use information to deliver the directory and search, maintain useful business listings, answer enquiries, correct errors and prevent misuse. We rely on our legitimate interests in operating a useful, accurate and secure business directory, balanced against the rights of the people concerned. Where we must keep or disclose information to meet a legal obligation, that obligation is our basis for doing so.
Maps and optional location access
Map tiles are loaded from OpenStreetMap. This sends technical request information, including your IP address and the map tiles requested, to its servers. Read the OpenStreetMap Foundation privacy policy for details.
“Use my location” only requests your location after you choose it and allow browser permission. Coordinates are used in your browser to show your position and calculate approximate distances; our map code does not send those coordinates to the directory's search service. Loading map tiles around your position can reveal the area being viewed to the tile provider. You can browse without sharing your location and revoke permission in your browser.
Cookies and browser storage
The current site does not include Google Analytics or advertising tracking cookies in its application code. Cloudflare may use necessary security cookies when protecting the site. Your browser may cache files to load pages faster. You can manage cookies, cached files and location permissions through your browser settings.
Who receives information
Cloudflare hosts and protects the website. Our directory, search and email service providers process information needed to provide those services. Published listing details are visible to visitors and may be indexed by search engines. We may disclose information where required by law or necessary to investigate misuse or protect legal rights.
Cloudflare operates a global network, so technical information may be processed outside the UK. Its privacy policy explains its processing. Contact us for information about the providers and transfer arrangements relevant to your enquiry. External business websites and map or directions services have their own privacy policies.
How long information is kept
We keep correspondence for as long as needed to handle the enquiry, follow up corrections and retain a relevant record of the outcome. We consider unresolved issues, legal obligations and potential disputes when deciding whether a record is still needed. Business details remain published while relevant to the directory, subject to correction and removal requests. Technical logs are subject to our providers' retention settings and security needs. Contact us if you need details about a particular record.
Your rights
Depending on the circumstances, you can ask to access or correct your personal information, have it erased, restrict its use or receive a portable copy. You can object to our use of your personal information based on legitimate interests, including its publication in a business listing. Email [email protected] with enough information to identify the record. We may need to confirm your identity before acting on a request.
You can complain to the UK's Information Commissioner's Office. You are also welcome to contact us first so we can try to resolve the issue.
Changes to this policy
We will update this page when the site's use of personal information changes. The date above shows the latest revision.
